About Wheeling, WV

Wheeling was first settled in 1769, established as a town in 1795, incorporated as town in 1805 and became a city in 1836, all while still part of the Commonwealth of Virginia. That changed in 1861 when 41 western counties seceded from Virginia, which was part of the Confederacy during the U.S. Civil War. This secession was a result of the 1861 Wheeling Convention, a pair of meetings held in May and June of that year that culminated in the establishment of the Restored Government of Virginia, which was then recognized by the Union as the legitimate government of Virginia, with Wheeling as its capital. West Virginia would then become its own state in 1863. The capital bounced between Wheeling and Charleston for several years before its final move to Charleston in 1885.

Wheeling is also notable for the Wheeling Suspension Bridge, which was the first bridge to span the Ohio River. It was the largest suspension bridge in the world upon its completion in 1849 (at just over 1,000 feet long), a title it held until the first Queenston-Lewiston Bridge (spanning the Niagara River and linking the U.S. and Canada) opened two years later. The Wheeling Suspension Bridge is the oldest suspension bridge still in use in the United States, and it is recognized as both a National Historic Landmark and a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
