Understanding a Powertrain Warranty Vs. a Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty

When purchasing your next car, understanding the ins and outs of different warranties can help you to decide which is the right one for you. As one of two major warranty types, a powertrain warranty covers your vehicle's propulsion system. This includes the transmission, engine and other parts like the differential and driveshaft. This warranty won't include wear to things like belts, fluids, the clutch or the battery.

A bumper-to-bumper warranty covers almost everything in the car, including electronic systems like the stereo and its suspension system or air-conditioning. Not everything is covered, however; interior fabrics, body panels, glass and other surfaces may be excluded from the warranty.
