An engine is only as strong as its weakest part. One essential engine component that must be maintained is the oil. However, some Wheeling drivers may not know how to check car oil or even the role it plays under the hood. That is why the service experts here at Straub Nissan have put together a guide to help you understand the importance of learning how to check the oil level in a car. You need the right amount of oil to ensure that all of your engine’s moving parts can function without too much friction. If you don’t know how to check car oil, you could run low and overheat as you cruise through Moundsville. Not to worry, Straub Nissan is here to teach you how to check the oil level in a car in just a few easy steps.

Learn How to Check the Oil Level in Your Car

While many newer vehicles have electronic monitors to regulate the oil levels in your car, it can still be handy to learn how to check car oil the old fashioned way. Start by reading your owner’s manual to see if you can manually check your oil level and for directions to finding your dipstick. To check your oil level, follow these steps:

  1. Park your car on flat ground and turn off the engine. Allow plenty of time for the engine to cool down.
  2. Locate the dipstick.
  3. Remove the dipstick and clean any oil off with a rag.
  4. Insert the dipstick all the way back into the tube. Upon removal, examine both sides to see where the oil level is at.

Your dipstick will indicate in some way where the proper oil level is located. If the top of your oil streak falls within the two hash marks or the crosshatched area, your oil level is sufficient. If this isn’t the case, slowly add more oil until the proper level is reached.

Why Check Your Car’s Oil Level?

Often overlooked, engine oil is of paramount importance. Insufficient oil levels can lead to erosion, friction, and overheating. In most cases, it is recommended to get an oil change at least twice a year. In the interim, you should check your oil at least once a month to keep tabs on the volume and condition of the oil. If you notice that the hood of your car is hot to the touch and you see steam billowing out from the front end, you could have an oil leak. Getting that issue repaired immediately is critical to prevent overheating.
